The tiny boy woke up, shivering, wondering at all the bustle around him. He was tired still; it had been a long couple of days. He had been taken from his sisters and brothers, put in a small dark box, and stacked in the back of a big, big truck. It seemed as if he had ridden for weeks, and when the truck finally stopped, he had been put in a glass box with newspaper on the floor. It was bigger than the box he’d traveled in, but boy, he was cold. He missed snuggling up with his brothers and sisters. He felt very alone, and frightened.
All day long the little boy watched the people walk by his cage. He tried to catch their attention for a time, but when one little girl stopped to look through the glass at him, her mother grabbed her by the arm and took her away. The little boy heard her say, “Those things stink!” The little boy smelled himself in several spots to be sure, and thought to himself, “I don’t either stink!”
The little boy finally huddled in a corner of his small cold box, wishing hard for his family’s warmth.
Suddenly, an excited voice shrilled, “Mommy, look! It’s a ferret!!” right over the little boys head. He looked up to find a small boy standing there, with wide blue eyes, and blonde curly hair.
“Awwww,” thought the little guy. “His mommy will just tell him I stink, and make him leave.” He laid his head back down.
Then the little ferret heard a gentle voice say, “Oh, Alex, isn’t he just beautiful?”
The little head came up again, surprised. “Who, me? I am?” thought the tiny boy. He jumped to his feet, and did a happy dance. Well, tried to, for you see, the box was so small he bounced off first one wall, then another, and landed in a heap. He sprang back to his feet, looking embarrassed. But it was ok, because Alex and his mommy were laughing with delight!
“Oh, Mommy, may I hold him please?” asked Alex.
“Of course, son,” answered his mother, reaching into the cage and gently picking the small ferret up. She held him to her face for a moment, burying her nose in his neck. “Mmmm… you smell delicious!” she pronounced, as she handed the tiny ferret to Alex.
Alex held the little boy close to his heart, and he trembled there, snuggling his head under Alex’s neck.
“Mommy, can’t we take him home with us?”
Mommy looked at them for a moment, and then said, “Alex a pet is a BIG responsibility. He must be fed, and groomed, and loved. He must have a clean place to live. And most of all, he must be played with lots and lots! Are you prepared to spend much of your time after school taking care of this little guy?”
“I promise, Mommy, I’ll take such good care of him,” said Alex solemnly. And he crossed his heart for good measure.
The tiny ferret was listening carefully. He squirmed in Alex’s arms, reaching up to kiss his face, thanking him for his promise. He wiggled all over. “Oh, please, please, take me home,” he thought!
Mommy took the small, brown, squirmy bundle from Alex, once again snuggling him close to her face. “What do you think, Little One? Would you like to come home with us?”
“Oh, yes, yes, YES!!!!” he thought, chuckling out loud in his excitement, as he kissed Mommy on all of her face that he could reach. “Yes, yes, YES!!”
Mommy and Alex giggled out loud at the funny noise the tiny ferret made!
“I think he says yes, Mommy!” Alex exclaimed.
“OK,” said Mommy. “But we need to find out what we need to take care of him.”
Mommy found a clerk in the store. “We’d like to buy this little guy,” she explained. “What do we need to take care of him?”
The clerk answered, “Well, first of all, he’ll need a cage.” He led them to an aisle with nothing but cages. “This one should do,” he said, pointing to a small wire cage.
Mommy looked at the little cage, and thought of the little ferret trying to dance in the glass cage they had taken him from.
“I think,” she said, “we need something bigger.”
The clerk showed her a slightly bigger cage. “This one should be fine,” he suggested.
Mommy shook her head.
The clerk rolled his eyes. He pointed at yet another cage. “This is the largest I have.”
“That will have to do then,” agreed Mommy. “Now, what else do we need?”
“The small animal supplies are on aisle 13. I’ll take this cage to the front for you.”
“Thank you,” said Mommy sweetly. “And books? Do you have a book to tell me how to take good care of him?”
“Aisle 8,” answered the clerk, once again rolling his eyes.
Mommy turned to look at Alex and the little boy, now snuggled in his arms, yawning widely. After all the excitement, he was very tired. And he was truly warm, for the first time in days!
Alex grinned at Mommy.
Mommy grinned back.
“Let’s go look at books, first,” said Mommy. “Maybe that will give us a clue as to what else we need.”
Mommy, Alex, and the sleepy little ferret headed for aisle 8.
Mommy looked at the rows and rows of books. “Oh, my,” she said. Then she saw it, Ferrets for Dummies. She picked it up, paging through it, stopping to read here and there.
“I think this will do,” she told Alex and his sleeping bundle, heading for aisle 13.
Here Alex settled on the floor, legs crossed, the tiny ferret nestled in his arms.
Mommy stood there for some time, flipping through the pages of the book, stopping from time to time to read intently, then studying the items on the shelf, then selecting things and dropping them in her basket, then once more flipping the pages of the book.
Alex waited patiently; content to hold the tiny, warm ferret in his arms, watching his new pet sleep.
Finally, Mommy said, “I think that’s the best we can do,” and together the three of them headed for the checkout counter.
They finally got the cage and all their sacks loaded into the car, and headed for home.
Alex burst through the door. “Daddy, Daddy!” he shouted, startling the tiny ferret still sleeping in his arms awake. “Look what we got!”
“Oh, my!” exclaimed Daddy, smiling at Mommy over the heads of the two small boys. “Isn’t that something! Errr…what is it?” he asked.
“It’s a ferret, of course,” answered Alex, “and he’s my new best friend. And I’m going to take the best care of him.”
“Of course you will, son,” said Daddy, ruffling Alex’s hair.
Suddenly, the little ferret began squirming in Alex’s arms. Alex put him down, and the little boy looked around frantically. “Where, oh where, is the litter box?” he wondered. He finally ran to the nearest corner and lifted his tail, looking apologetically at Daddy.
Daddy laughed. “Well,” he said, “I guess we better get your house set up.”
With that, he headed for the car to help Mommy unload the new little fuzzy's cage.
Once the car was unloaded, Mommy said, “I’ll leave you boys to it, and go fix supper,” and headed for the kitchen.
Daddy got his tools, and he and Alex started to work, putting the cage together. The little boy explored the room, dooking as he nosed around. He finally settled in to help Alex and Daddy, climbing into the box the cage had come in, digging in all the bags, and exploring Daddy’s tool box.
“Hey, you little stinker,” exclaimed Daddy as his screwdriver disappeared under the sofa. “Bring that back here!”
Daddy and Alex giggled as the tiny ferret did a little silly dance all around them.
Soon the cage was put together, and the little ferret was quick to investigate it, climbing through the tubes and into the hammock, and checking out the food and water bowls. He took a long drink, and then ran to the little box in the back corner.
“Good boy,” said Mommy from the doorway, smiling at the little brown fuzz ball.
Mommy’s beautiful smile made the little ferret feel so happy that he ran to her, dooking and dancing at her feet until he once again fell over. His new family laughed at him, and he jumped up and did it again, this time landing on Mommy’s feet, where he attacked her shoestrings.
“You little stinker,” she laughed as she scooped him up and smothered him in kisses. Mommy put him gently in his hammock, saying, “Here you go, little guy. Why don’t you take a nap while we eat?”
Yawning, the little ferret agreed, and curled up in his new hammock to sleep.
After dinner, Mommy, Daddy, and Alex were relaxing in the living room. Mommy was reading aloud from Ferrets for Dummies when a little head popped around the doorway. He was dragging a sock he had found while exploring under Alex’s bed. Alex jumped up. “You little stinker,” he exclaimed, running to retrieve his sock. That quickly turned into a tug-of-war, and the little ferret dooked and pulled, dooked and pulled, till Alex fell on the floor, helpless with laughter. The little ferret jumped on his back, running up and down, tickling him with his feet, and snuffling in his ears. Soon, Mommy and Daddy joined them on the floor, and they all tickled each other and laughed and laughed.
Suddenly, the little ferret ran up Daddy’s pant leg, causing him to hop up, shouting, “you little stinker!!” and shaking his leg until the little fuzzy thing fell out, Plop! on the floor. Then they all snuggled on the sofa and watched a movie about a Prince and a beautiful Princess who lived happily ever after.
All too soon, Mommy said, “Off to bed, Son.”
But Daddy said, “Before you go to bed, Son, I think we should decide what to name the new little guy.”
Alex thought a moment. “Well,” he said, “we sure call him Little Stinker a lot. Maybe that’s what we should name him.”
“Hmmm…” said Daddy, “Stinker.”
Mommy said, “He certainly is a silly little thing. Stinker seems to fit him.”
“Stinker it is then,” said Daddy. “Good night, Stinker. Gook night, Alex,” he said, kissing them each on the head.
Later that night, snuggled warm in bed under Alex’s chin, Stinker dreamed beautiful, happy dreams of living happily ever after with his new family.
