Lily was doing so well, but this weekend the diarrhea came back. I put her back on the CLora Palm and her stools are getting back to normal again. Its so frustrating. She has been on the antibiotics for weeks. Since we got her. She gets better then as soon as we take her off of them she gets the runs again. I have been really careful to be sure she gets only spring water and cant get into any tap water since the vet agreed with what the guy we got her from told us about her not being able to handle tap water. The vet says some ferrets cannot take the chemicals in our tap water. I changed all the ferrets water to spring water and even the cats water in my room where the ferrets play. I wish I knew a awy to stop the runs for her without the antibiotics as I don't know what long term use is doing to her insides. She is still running and playing with the rest and her weight is staying at 2 lbs 2 oz. SHe drinks alot of water and seems fine otherwise. She worrys me so.

Sorry to ear Lily has bad days... For the antibiotics I know it is not the best to let them for long period, but Nahum and Anika too were months on it. Almost one year on it... Did you talk with your vet about the Bird Bene-bac ? Nahum had diarrhea if he eats chicken, and can have blood .. lamb is the safe food for him.

When my Itty Girl was in her prime, she managed to access the bathtub on a daily basis. Itty would climb up a mop pail setting between the vanity and the tub and then straddle the tub rim and over she would go. Is it possible little Lily is somehow coming into contact with tap water by climbing into your tub or by accessing a shower stall floor? This is just a thought and doesn't make much sense in view of the fact that Lily gets the runs every time you take her off her antibiotic. Has the vet every suggested keeping Lily on a maintenance dose of the antibiotic to prevent diarrhea? I hope she gets all better soon, gf. Hugs, Greta

Hello all.......... yes, I've returned, this time for good. My thought on Lilly is does she have a possible undected allergy to the food you have been giving her? Also, Lilly's intestinal tract may be having difficulty absorbing the fat in her food. One drawback in administering antibiotics, (which has been mentioned already) is the antibiotic will continue to destroy the good bacteria in the gut. After you have finished the course of meds, bene-bac, a probiotic will restore the flora in her gut. Has the vet mentioned the possibility of Lilly having a food allery? Just a thought. What antibiotics is she on?

Shadoe, I just wanted to mention.....furdawg really isn't a new member, he's been around for years and is very knowledgable regarding the care of ferrets. SO he may have some insight that we don't have because he was in vet school also.
I had one ferret that had IBS, irritable bowel syndrome. In the beginning whenever she would get the runs, it would be back on antibiotics for her. But I too did not like the idea of her always being on antibiotic. After a while, I would keep the antibtics on hand, but if she only had one or two runny poos I would not start her on them. Many times she would have intermittant runs and then without the antibiotics she would go back to regular ones on her own. I think by the time she was 4 she basically regulated herself.

Shadoe what's the latest news on Lily ? ok she has been in my thoughts and prayers even though I haven't had time to reply to you. What kind of food are you giving her ? and what kind of treats and how much ? Is Lily more nervous than others ? stress can cause diarrhea too you know ! Try the Probiotic stuff by Marshalls, it works great I can tell : www.ferretdepot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=FS218
