Some of my fuzzies, have taken to digging in the food dish and throwing thier food all over the level its on. I gave up on Willow and Lucy and Ricky and now put thier food directly on a shelf I have set up apart from teh rest and tis seems to work for them. TOby and Teddy and Wilma just started this habit though and they are getting food all over. Is there a reason for this? I there a way to stop it? Thanks Shadoe

Maybe you are filling the bowl to high and it's more fun to toss it out. Every once in a while mine will do that, but I don't have much food in their cage, I have the main dish and water on a rug in my bedroom. I do have a water bottle in the cage and a small dish of food, just in case they are too lazy to come out and go to their regular one.
I don't think we can ever figure out the habits of our ferrets LOL

Every now and then Itty will do this, too. Digging in the food bowl and throwing it all over the cage seems to be a very entertaining game for this little girl. I've found that when there's just a small amount of food in the bowl, Itty doesn't enjoy her game as much. Sometimes Itty will splash in the water bowl, which results in a wet shelf. When the food is mixed with the water, guess what happens? Yuck! After a day or so it's a stinky mess if mommy doen't get busy and clean it up. A J-feeder will help discourage tossing the food around, but my kids' J-feeder had some water added and it made such a horrible odor I took it out of the cage. Couldn't figure out what was stinking unilt I pulled and emptied that feeder. Good luck, GF. As Heidi says, This is just a part of being owned by ferrets. Your kids will outgrow this habit as they age (I think). Itty will be 6 in August though, and she's still at it. Hugs, Greta

do you mix more than 1 kind of food together? I used to mix about 5 different foods, literally a ferret TOSSED salad. Different ferrets liked different foods and they would throw what they didn't like. My dog Kendall loved it, she got trained to where if she heard one of them crunching she would go in the room and just sit down and wait for her treats.
When I switched them to only 1 food (Maxximum Nutrition Kitten) I don't have the flying food problem anymore, and it's MUCH cheaper than most foods made for ferrets.
Good luck~!
Oh, do you have it in one of those 'j' feeders? I had one of those with my first 2 ferrets and they just thought it was a toy and jumped in and had a dig fest~!
If nothing else you may want to get some cardboard or something and zip tie it behind the food area, it would at least help with food being tossed out of the cage.

Mine do the same thing so I have a small plastic tray with low sides that I set it in. This way most of the food stays close to the bowl and off of the floor. Even when I don't mix foods Bethany has to "snorkle" in the kibble!!!
