Hi all,
My little girl Lacey had a swollen vulva and i took her to the vet, it was decided she needed surgery for adrenal and she had the surgery yesterday. I brought her home this morning and she is in such bad shape right now, i am really scared. The vet said keep an eye on her, she has had major surgery and only weighs about a pound. I have six ferrets and this is my first adrenal surgery, can anyone tell me what to expect and any advice? She is almost seven years old, i am very worried. They removed the left adrenal and part of the right due to a small tumor there also. SHe is not responding well at all, although it has not even been 24 hours. I am just so scared, any advice or stories to share? I am just so nervous i dont know what to do with myself. I just keep peeking in her cage and making sure she is okay. Please any advice at all..
thanks, laney

Laney ... call back now at the clinic to talk to the vet and explain the situation !!! Tomorrow it's closed and if you are in the States Monday too !!!I want you to read this, I cannot copy and paste the infos here due to copyright, but scroll down and please read bilateral adrenal disease : www.ferretuniverse.com/health/adrenal.aspI don't know how much of the right gland remains to produce hormones, usually vets don't touch both glands at once ... Do you have at least some Pred ? Does she eat ? Your little girl will probably need Florinef & Percotin too to avoid an Addison crisis. www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?c=17342&articleid=2099The best advice I can give you now is call your vet asa possible ! And please keep us updated Lots of prayers for Lacey

Linda, Thank you so much for coming aboard to help laney. I don't have experience with adrenal disease, but was going to suggest offering Lacey some duck soup from a finger to see if she'll accept it and get at least a little nourishment by being hand fed.
Laney, Please, please! Keep us posted! Loving hugs, Greta

Hi Ladies, we rushed Lacey back to the vet, but she passed as we pulled in the parking lot. They tried to save her, but couldn't. Her little body could not handle the surgery and she was also 7 years old. I am completely devasted, my little old lady, i will miss her so much. We buried her in the back by the rose bushes. Thank you all and i am so sorry my first posting was so sad... laney

I'm so sorry to hear about Lacey. You did your best and so did she. 7 years old is a nice long life for a ferret. Lacey knew she was loved never forget that. Now she's pain free, running, dooking and trying out her new wings. She will always be a big part of your life and will be waiting for you when it's your time to pass. Hang in there

Oh, Laney Dear, I am so, so sorry to read that your little girl didn't make it. I came back hoping to read better news. My heart reaches out to you and you're in my prayers, gf. I lost my first ferret, my precious little TT whome I'd raised as a kit, less than a week after his surgery for insulinoma. I know how devastated you feel, Dear. God bless, comfort and strengthen you while your broken heart heals. Loving hugs, Greta

I share you pain and Sorry I was not here yesterday. Now that you are a member here, please stick with us, I think that many of us would have been able to relate life experiences with our ferrets and perhaps we might have been able to give you some alternatives to surgery, especially at 7 years of age. But you did what you felt needed to be done and we always tend to have confidence in our vets, though sometimes we realize they are not always right. Do rejoice in the wonderful time you had with baby, and let the memories of these last days fade away

Thank you all so much, i did repeatedly remind the vet of her age, but he said she would be fine and he is very reputable, i do however feel overwhelming guilt, i just wanted to do the right thing. I am so glad you are all here for me, i dont know what i would do, people just dont understand unless you are animal lovers like us. I can bawl my eyes out for creatures i never even met, you are all just like me, i am so lucky to have you and thanks again everyone.

Please try not to feel guilty. You did what you and you vet felt was right. Things happen that are beyond our control. Feel sadness and cry for your loss, but do not feel guilt

Shadoe, Yes this is the first ferret i have lost. I have a nice story to share tho, i have 5 other ferrets, 4 boys and one girl. Well about 2 years ago, i bought this pink princess type bed and the only one who would sleep in it was Lacey, she owned it ! Well last night i peeked over their partition ( they have a free range room ) and there was everyone crammed in her little princess bed. All these big manly ferrets crammed in a little pink bed with arms and legs and heads all dangling over the sides cause they cant all fit. What a sight ! They knew she was gone and just wanted to get close i guess. Geez, what a bunch, gotta love em. Just thought that would give you all a smile for the day.
thanks for everything love laney

Sorry to hear of another angel, the picture is my silky that went to the bridge , she cries when another leaves for the bridge. She cries for the one left on this earth who mourns, and tears of happiness for the one who joins her at the bridge, because they now are no longer in pain.
My gift I wish I could give to you
If I could turn your tears of sorrow into tears of joy I would. If somehow I could turn back time so you could spend more time I would. If there was some way to make this a happy time for you Then that is what I would give you. These things and more I wish I could do for you. It is a mystery to me why god chooses who goes and who Stays, who suffers and who is happy, maybe someday we Will understand why. For now only god knows why he brings such tears to our eyes. These things I may not be able to give to you, but we can let our loved one live on in our memories. Remember the good times you had together, for in our memories they will live on forever. Kyle....

Its amazing how the animals know isnt it. That whole vision of them all in her Laceys bed brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful thing. Maybe they were trying to tell you that shes still there with you. She is you know in spirit and in your heart. Although I have 3 dogs that I love with all my heart, sometimes I feel that Niki my Heart dog that went to the bridge in 2003 is still here with me. Little things happen that remind me of her daily. Give your fuzzies a hug for me and a belly rub. They miss her too. Shadoe

Thank you both so much, i did run for the camera, but one of my guys saw me, and they all jumped up, i try to tell them that "I am not an automated snack machine" because as soon as they see me, they all run for the cabinet that holds their snacks. Then Cashmere runs over to the litter box and "pretends" to go pee pee, because when i trained him he got a snack, geez that was two years ago, and he STILL uses that trick on me, which i fall for every time !! Man i am such a pushover..........

I am very sorry to read about the passing of your little one. Many things come into play when adrenal surgery is considered. The vet should ALWAYS check for heart murmurs or unusual sounds of the heart and lungs. IMO I will never have a ferret over the age of five years undergo said surgery. My course of treatment has always been a melatonin implant and lupron injections monthy if required.I just wish more research was conducted for adrenaland insulinoma. I'm certain you did everything and anything you could to preserve your little ones livelyhood. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
