John has to get out and walk more after his surgery so Teri, our daughter, decided to go ahead and get him the puppy he's been wanting. We picked out a little daschund(?) mixed that won't get very big. While we were at the Humane Society the head of the place was talking with us and asked us if we knew what daschunds were bred for. I said yes, that they were bred for hunting but we are going to raise the pup with the ferts so we don't see a problem. Then I almost fell over when she said that yes, they are bred for hunting rats . . . which is what a ferret is!!! I was so caught off guard at this remark that I was speechless!!! Seems like these people should at least know the difference between rodents and mammals!!

Don't be too upset with what the HS rep said, gf. She is probably working there more for her love of animals than for pay. Those jobs don't offer much in the way of monetary assets. It's true that ferrets are NOT rodents and they look nothing at all like rats. They also are much more affectionate to humans than are rats. The lady who made this remark is just uneducated about rodents, gf. Hugs, Greta

I meant to say mustelids and not mammals, as both are mammals. It just blew me away that the head of the place didn't know any more than she did. I know that they've had some ferrets when they've done seizures. Makes me wonder what they do with them!!!

She sounds like she needs a little more education in the animal kingdom
