Dr B says Alice feels bloated (I agree) but she got no fluids from an abdominal tap, and she's dehydrated again. Temp, resp and heart rate normal. Best guess is intestinal gas, due to IBD. Alice got sub-q fluids because she's not taking enough in. I get to give her that 2x a day until she perks up. Plus we're to push probiotics with feedings, plus children's gas-x 4x/day, plus her pred 2x. I asked about food allergies, particularly turkey, and she doesn't think she shows any signs of allergic reaction. Dr B said there's no need to change pred dose, or antibiotics, because we can't really say she has an infection, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. So the good news is she may see Birthday #6 in December, and this visit was under $60. The bad news is I have to sub-q twice a day for a few days, and if it's IBD, it can go in cycles of good and bad, like it has 2 months in a row.

Omg i forgot the update. The vet thinks its trapped gas because shes bloated but there was no abdominal fluid She got sub q fluids which i get to do twice A day for a few days and shes on children's gas x plus pred. Were trying to find an alternative kibble without poultry. Shes still lethargic. The vet is supposed to call tomorrow to check on her. Wed hoped if it was gas two doses of the simethicone would have helped by now. Shes not giving up so neither are we. Were ordering some ziwipeak lamb for her. The vet didnt think it is a food allergy tho but her backslide coincided with the last time she had turkey. Both dar and i have been having gut issues recently. But i did notice that Al doesnt fart when she poops lately and the others always do. The only diet component we all have in common is bottled distilled water and ground turkey. Hmmmmmm. But none of the others are sick. It could take a while with peaks and valleys to get her right if its ibd. We just hope if she comes out of this valley she never gets this low again.

Gas pills arent helping. Gonna ask vet to call in amoxi and carafate and also try peocid. Ibd can cause ulcers depending on root cause. We havent tried antibiotics and further research suggests that regimen has good results. Either way. Ibd is a (b!tch) pregnant dog to get under control. This is my first case. Learning is hard. But at least we have a little money and a vet that works with us.

This is our first cse of suspected IBD. I'm posting, and Dar is keeping meticulous records. But, I hate myself. We got the carafate and amox. Vet also gave me Buprenex which I can inject or give orally. That scrip was $50. Gave her a shot and 1.5 dose of amoxi to get it jump started. went to put the amoxi in the fridge in the ferret med/food shelf and we found Buprenex leftover from Poppy. It's good for another 4 months. If I had known I still had that I would have given it yesterday or Wednesday. The down side is that it pretty much knocks fuzzies out, and even tho even tho Al is getting half the dosage Poppy did, it makes it tough to feed every 2-4 hours. At this point, it should keep her comfy long enough for the amoxi to start doing its job, if it helps at all. But, if she keeps getting the Bup, how will we know when she feels better if she's loopy from the drugs?
We're at the point now that we will do this regimen for a couple weeks max, but if she doesn't at least get out of bed on her own in a few days we can't see any point in investing much more effort. We have meds, and food ordered. We're still fighting, but she needs to show some sort of positive outcome, or I'll be kicking myself in the a$s for dragging it out too long. Short term goal is ambulate to potty and back independently. (OT talk) She smells like a ferret nursing home. I may bathe her tonight while she's high, otherwise I don't want to make her any more uncomfortable than she is already. I will do everything I can, but if nothing helps, I won't drag it on forever. I wish I had, but still hope to have, better news.

Make sure you give the carafate and amoxi at different times. Amoxi won't absorb if taken with carafate as the carafate coats the stomach and the intestinal lining. Tails and toes crossed here.

Alice was helped across the Bridge at 2 o'clock. Nothing we did helped at all, and her kidneys finally quit. She was peeing out every drop I gave her sub-q. She's probably been in kidney failure for a while, but not much could be done about it anyway. We couldn't watch her keep declining, she looked to be in pain, and all the pain med did was knock her out. I'll put a memorial in later. Right now I have to go bury her next to Poppy. My beautiful little girl with the soft new coat.

There will be a new star in the sky tonight. She'll be the one winking. So sorry.
