Poor old Alice has a prolapse. It was bleeding Monday night and when I checked yesterday morning it looked like she had some clear discharge as well. Dar soaked her in epsom salts earlier and she didn't seem to mind, and I picked up some prep h. And another BG tester. She's been losing a little weight and stumbling a bit, but she still eats and doesn't strain to poop. Her bum has always stuck out a bit but this is a prolapse. My baby will be 6 in Dec and she's never had any health issues.
We checked her BG yesterday and it was 53 so we started her on pred. I talked to our vet and she said it could be colitis. Yesterday her poop was green diarrhea but tonight it's browner and firmer. The vet is open saturday so if Alice needs to go in we can take her then. Hopefully the epsom salts, pred and prep h will help the prolapse. Right before our vacation...

The things are kids can have. I actually had only one ferret that this happened to and it scared the begeezes out of me. I thought she was turning inside out. Probably was I was living in Puerto Rico at the time and exotic vets were non-existent. Our local very would treat them for ailments like a kitten, I took her in and was amazed when he just used his pinky and pushed it back in. And the absolutely amazing thing was her rectum never prolapsed again.
Hope Alice is ok and your methods work. That PrepH can be a godsend

How is dear Alice today? She looks so much like our Zoey that you met when you were here in Arizona. Alice and Zoey are about the same age. Zoey will be 6 the end of this month. She has slowed down a little but so far no health problems. I'll put Alice in my prayers.

Dee, it was Carol/Poppy that was Zoey's twin. Alice is a tiny dark sable that has gone mostly grey. Shes doing ok. Her poops and bum look better. But her butt is still not quite back to normal. Shes still dehydrated some but hopefully getting past the runs and the pred help.

She looks back to normal and shes eating a little more shes always been tiny and frail looking but she feels really skinny right now. She only lost a few onces but for her it was a lot. Were supplementing her soups to try to get weight back On Her but thats a chore fir ferrets. They lose it easy snd it takes a while to gain it back

One of the things that can put the weight on is gerber baby food stage two. But it can get quite tie expensive since usually once they start eating it that is all they want. I'm glad she is doing well and hope she chubs up a bit

I am glad Alice is doing better. I know how hard it is for a ferret to put weight back on. I wish it was that hard for people . I hope she just keeps getting better and better every day. I know she is getting the best possible care from you and Dar. You two are such animal lovers. I wish there was a lot more like you. I'll keep your dear Alice and Jaffa in my prayers.

Alice had her vet visit and it was a bit traumatic for her, but she's fine now. It took 5 tries to get a rectal temp, which finally succeeded on her second dose of Ferretone. Her fecal float test was negative, so no parasites, and her BG was 82. She didn't get pred this morning. The vet took blood from an artery at the base of her tail and it bled pretty good. She got to wear a bandage wrap for a few minutes, which of course she hated. Every time she thought they were done with her she crawled back into the carrier and buried herself in the t-shirt, and a few minutes later they pulled her out again. When she got home she ate a good portion of soup. I'm sure the stress was part of it, but while she was there she was shedding bunches of fur. It looks like she has a new undercoat starting and no bald spots, but I'm talking bunches of fur. The tech's maroon scrub shirt was covered in white fur. She didn't appear to be shedding at all yesterday. And I'm getting more confident in my palpating skills, as the vet didn't find any abnormal masses either. But Alice is easy because of her size. So, we're left with IBD. (Even if it were insulinoma she'd be on pred.) Ever since we took the turkey our of her soups her poops have been better. She's gaining some weight, but still 8% less than her visit in April. She'll be on liquid prednisolone for IBD for some time, maybe for life, until she can go without. The good news is that it will be a much lower dose than if it were insulinoma, and eventually, hopefully, only once every other day. I've never dealt with IBD in ferrets or cats. Anyone who has?

I had one ferret with IBD, but it was intermittent Her diet would always stay the same, and she would be fine and then one day....watch out there was liquid poop all over the place. This went on for about a year and then who know why it stopped.

Alice is looking a lot like my Zoey! I can't remember but I think you said that Alice was about 6 years old. Is that right? If she is she and Zoey are close to the same age. I will post more about what is going on on with Zoe in a separate post. I am glad Alice has you and Dar to take such good care of her. This is Zoey a few weeks ago.

Wow I can't believe how dark she still is. Carol (aka Poppy, Zoey's clone) was just starting to go grey when she passed at 5, but Alice has been grey in the back end for a couple years. Zoey looks like she's going light around her head.

Alice is back to 1 1/2 lb, but she still looks skinny with her fur being so thin. We've cut her pred to .4 mL once a day.

Maybe Mac could share some of his weight at 3.9 pounds, then maybe he wouldn't pee on his belly all the time Lift up that girth!

That must be a big boy thing. Zeus our 3+ ponder always has a wet belly after he pees. You have to be very careful to make sure he is dry when you let him lay on your lap

We're giving her 5cc carnivore care every 1 1/2- 2 hrs. She takes it ok, but hardly moves otherwise. She was laying in her waste this morning. Whenever I've seen that before, it was the last day.

That is so sad, but I think you are right. That is when I usually will take that dreaded visit to the vet. I know you have really given Alice the best of care, she couldn't have gotten any better. The short life of ferrets can really break one's heart
