We're taking our Sonny in for a splenectomy (sp?) tomorrow. Dr. Baillie will take a look around while he's in there to see if everything else is ok. Sonny had a Deslorin implant last summer and went from a naked, adrenal & insulinoma sufferer to a beautifully furry & "no meds at all" little guy. But his spleen has been growing to the point that it's squishing his stomach and intestines and ruining his appetite, so it's gotta go. Prayers for a safe surgery and quick recovery will be appreciated. Marco Polo is going along in case a blood transfusion is necessary, as Sonny has a low red cell count. I'll keep everyone posted on their progress.

Sonny is out of surgery and doing fine, but there were a few surprises along the way. Due to some long-ago injury, Sonny's spleen was in 3 separate pieces. One piece was shaped like a ball, one was a flat strip and tapered out to paper-thin, and the other was a calcified piece about marble-size. Since Sonny was a rescue, we have little info on his past, although I do know that his former owner had a boxer. Did the boxer rip into Sonny? Did one of the former owner's kids man-handle him? Did Sonny fall onto something and injure himself? The pieces are being sent to pathology to answer some of these questions. Marco Polo's trip was only for moral support, as Sonny did not need any extra blood. I'll pass along any information that comes back from the vet.

Glad he's ok. It does sound like the dog may have got hold of him. Could be why he was given up.

I am so happy Sonny is doing well. He sounds like one tough little guy. Our Dusty had his spleen removed two years ago when he was 5 years old. He is doing very well for a seven year old ferret. Here are some pictures of Dusty when he had his surgery and now.
