I was pretty convinced that Pandora was deaf, but the last week or so, I'm not so sure. When I call her by name, even loudly, "Pandy Pandy Pandy!," she doesn't respond. But when I call "Soupies!" in my high-pitched ferret-talk voice, she magically appears. And today when I ran the vacuum in the ferret room she and Abita both popped out of a drawer at the same time. She also doesn't respond to a squeakie. Others respond to "Soupies!" so maybe I should just call them that way, but I hate for them to show up and not get rewarded.

I know what you mean. We thought and the vet agreed that Zeus was deaf. Yet he will still come sometimes when I call soup time. I guess we will never know for sure.

Sometimes they can hear at different frequencies, so might hear high pitched sounds or low pitched sounds. Then there are the ignore you sounds, which I think they all use, when engaged in doing a naughty thing.

Someone on another forum said that one of theirs acted deaf for over a year and suddenly it was like they could hear. Pandy is responding to soupies as well as shaking the treat jar, so I guess now I have to teach her her name, lol. She turned 2 in January (we estimate.)

I definitely go along with selective hearing. Shake that treat jar and they come running, call their name because they peed on the floor....and you'll never find them
