She's gone. My escape artist who could have been lost over a dozen times has died of an infected tooth. This one may do it. This may break this ferret addiction. Because I can't take the constant loss, and all of my research and efforts add up to losing my very favorite furry family member of all of my 55 years at way too young an age from something so simple. She was still eating soups Friday morning. She got a des implant in August, two vet visits in 3 days and she died a miserable death. Because we missed a week brushing teeth. I normally look at teeth when I do nails. I first noticed the redness Tuesday or Wednesday and Sunday night she's gone. She was supposed to be the first one I raised from a kit to 10 years old and with all we did she only made it halfway. Dar got to go deal with it alone, with me on the phone, as I was away on an overnight job. I got to hold her for the last time yesterday at the vet. It'll take some time to do a proper memorial. My remote thief, my potato thief, my cuddler. Daddy is so sorry.

I am so sorry to hear of your terrible loss. There is nothing I can say to ease the pain. I wish I could. When we lost Gracie, the little terror I helped raise from little hair less kit to feisty seven year old queen I said "No more. I can't take the pain of loosing anymore dear babies." I do understand the pain of that awful loss. I wish I could take away.

I thought the same when Really died in Aug....but now I have two young rescues After 30 years, I wanted to call it quits, but just couldn't. As long as I can get down on the floor and clean up papers, I will probably be a ferrant (that's a ferret parent)

All of Earth be heedful, For a tiny ferret with a big heart is passing through. Many battles hath this ferret braved. Numerous trials hath this fuzzy faced. It's plush fur moves with a breeze not felt. The light catches; purple highlights on the sable legs, the color of new snow, the warm chocolate mask of a thief, the dark shade of glistening silver, all of these and more. The pink, black, mottled, nose can sniff out lies. The obsidian, ruby, sapphire, eyes see the truth. All give way and make a path for this fur clad joy, A path for a star bound ferret, disappearing into a multicolored mist. The guardian of our hearts.

Believe me, we love the others left behind, but there will never be another Poppy. I felt the same about any more ferrets when Eddie died, when Sumo died 2 weeks after his 3rd birthday... There likely is no cure.
Abita is now the troublemaker. She will follow us around and usually come when called, but she's not really cuddly after a minute or 2. And get into EVERYTHING. Good thing she's not a thief, other than toys. She likes plastic bottles and blister paks.
Pandy is a big fluffy fun-loving girl who likes having her belly rubbed and playing rough. She likes to be held for a bit but has only fallen asleep on me once, and refuses to give kisses. Working on that...
Smokie and Yoshi like being held, but there's really no sense of adventure in them, other than Yoshi climbing some and opening drawers and cabinets. Smokie is laid back but you can wind him up some. He has never even pooped outside the box. They love playing with me and each other, especially bag rides and on the futon bed. I took Yoshi out for the first time today. We went to an open air produce market. I had him in a big pocket in my fleece jacket. He wanted out of the pocket pretty quick, but when I put him down on the leash he sorta panicked tried to hide. I picked him up and shopped one-handed and he was ok. Smokie has been out in the yard, but doesn't go far from the door yet.
Jaffa is a huge lover who loves licking my beard and french kissing if you don't catch him first. He has his favorite games and toys, steals sock from the laundry, floor, or your feet, goes for walks and car rides. He is the closest we have to Poppy, but he's not a climber so his misdeeds are limited to hosiery theft. He will sleep in your lap or on your shoulder for short spells. He will lay in your arm all day as long as you are moving around. As soon as you sit, he wants down, lol.
Prissy is showing signs of old age, being blind and deaf, but she still likes going out at night for a short walk.
So, you see, we still have 7 wonderful ferrets with diverse personalities, but Poppy was the one who possessed all of their lovable qualities. She knew when I was making salads and would appear out of nowhere to beg for a bit of pepper or cuke.
She was amazing, and was a clone of Dee's Zoey. When we met Zoey, I thought that Carol must have stowed away in Dar's purse, lol. Zoe has a very similar personality as well.

Lily, I did the numbers. Since September 2007 I have have shared my life with 22 ferrets. My first FOURescaped. I lost my mind every time, and made all kinds of modifications to play time, play area, etc. It turned out that no one else cared for the ferrets enough to even make sure the front and back door were closed. Teenage boys. Anyway, losing 13 ferrets in 75 months works out to one every 5.3 months. I actually went one year without a loss, but the first year was tough. 8 came from other owners, 6 with unknown ages. And yet, with all the trouble they cause, I can never get mad at them. Despite all that heartache, I can no longer imagine coming home and not having a fuzzy to cuddle and spoil. I was this close to driving 7 hours round trip to adopt an albino from a rescue in south Florida. If I still had my HOnda, I'd do it. But $60 gas plus $50 adoption fee is a bit much when I know there are others closer that need homes more urgently. I am a furoholic

That's a lot of fur in a short period of time. I started in 1984 in Puerto Rico but only have had 19 I think. Many times only 2 at at time Basically I have been fortunate. Though my heart breaks when I loose one, most have lived beyond the expected years. Only two, my first Slinky was less than one to a home accident and Clyde at 3 of aggressive juvenile lymphoma.
When we were down to only Mac this fall, I thought he would be our last, that my heart could not take any more, but then came Powder and Scout....and our family is complete again.
