I had the ferrets out in the main part of the house for playtime last night. I was watching TV, and saw this dark grey ferret by my entertainment center. Then thought, "wait a minute, I don't have any ferrets that color!!" I jumped up and grabbed the very dirty ferret and whisked him off to a bath. This is what he looked like...
[
He was so dirty, I could even tell which of the three white ferrets I had. Until I started washing him and found the dark spot on his head and realized it was Lucky!! I had to soap him three times before I got the dirt off him. And he still has a couple smudges. This is what he normally looks like....
I looked all over, but could not figure what he got into to get so dirty. Then a couple hours later, I went to round everybody up for soup and bedtime. I found 6 out of the 8. Could not find Diva or Bella anywhere. I searched the entire house 3 times, and no sign of the girls. Then I started thinking about how dirty Lucky had been, and began to wonder if the missing girls and their filthy brother were related. While I was searching, I came across a small hole in the baseboard from the old heating system. Well, we all know what ferrets + hole equals! I couldn't hear any ferret sounds coming from inside the wall, so I decided to go down the basement where it is quieter to have a listen. I looked and listened all through the basement. I even took the end cap off the main duct.....a couple months ago I thought my furnace was making funny noises. Turned out a register vent got knocked loose and there was a ferret (Boone) in the ductwork. But no ferrets in the duct this time. I put the cap back on, and was turning the light off in that room. Heard a noise, turned, and saw Bella running across the floor!! Picked up a nearby blanket, and out rolled Diva!!
The way I figure it, the ferrets decided to explore the hole in the wall. The same hole that has been there since we moved in and they have never shown an interest in before. Lucky was smart enough to come back out, but not before getting incredibly dirty. The hole allowed them access to the space below the floor. There is a drywall ceiling in the basement, with insulation between the ceiling and the floor. The room I found them in has a small closet, which has no ceiling. But I did see insulation hanging down in the closet. So the girls must have decided to explore further, ran out of solidness under their feet, and fell through the insulation into the basement. Where they probably had a rollicking good time exploring new territory until they wore themselves out and curled up in the blanket to sleep until Mama came and rescued them.
Now all the ferrets are "grounded" to their room until I can get something to patch the hole in the baseboard. Cuz we all know that now they know it's there, they will NOT leave it alone! LOL Not that being grounded to the room is a terribly bad thing. They got soooo many toys in there. But of course to them it is torture!!! hehehe
