I let the ferrets out of their room for a romp thru the house yesterday. I usually watch them pretty good, but yesterday I fell asleep on the couch for about an hour. When I woke up, I started rounding up the ferrets so I could put them in their room before I went to my brother's for turkey. Lucky and Loki were both in the bed in the ferret cage in their room. That was easy. Found Zoboo under the coffee table. Meeko was in his gator bed. Bella was under the couch, Boone under the chair. OK, that's 6 out of 8. Could not find Rosie or Diva. By this time I was already running late, no more time to search. So I figured by the time I got home they would have woken up from where they were sleeping and would come out. When I got home I spotted Rosie right away. Yay, only one more to find. I looked under, in, and around every place I figured a tiny ferret could be sleeping. No sign of Diva. So I looked again under, in, and around places I wouldn't suspect a tiny ferret to sleep, but she might be there anyways so it wouldn't hurt to look. Still no Diva. By now I'm starting to panic a little. Then my panic level went thru the roof.
My house used to have baseboard hot water heat. When they removed it, there were several holes left in my baseboards. I thought I had them all sealed up. Then I moved the chair and found another one. With a pile of sawdust dug out of it. I put my hand inside it, and found a hole that went off to the left. Crap. No idea how far it went. But I was pretty sure that was where Diva went. I went and grabbed the tone bottle, and squeezed tone scented air into the hole hoping to lure her out. No ferret. Then I went through the house AGAIN. Tearing the house apart, hoping and praying that I would find her curled up in some out of the way corner and not in my wall!! No such luck. By now I am in full panic mode. Squeezing tone air and shining a light in the hole as best I could. Because of course it's one of the deaf ones who goes missing. It's now 8 pm. Last I saw Diva was about 12:30.
So I shut everything off in the house. Laid down on the floor and listened. And all of a sudden I heard it. A little ferret snore. Held my breath as long as I could. Making sure it wasn't my nose making that whistling sound. Looked all around me, made sure it wasn't one of the cats breathing. Nope, that is definitely a Diva snore. Now what. Tone and a light aren't working. What can I use to lure her out of my wall? Wait, she's a soup addict. I opened a jar of baby food, put some on a lid, and put it in the hole. And.....nothing. No little ferret peeking out of the hole. By this time I was starting to think the ferret snore was all in my head. That she had gotten in the wall and was hopelessly stuck somewhere. Or the worst possibility, she had passed away in my wall. I'm laying there on the floor, in tears. All of a sudden I hear a scratching on the other side of the room.
My house has a couple of those old metal grates that go partway up the wall. I had already taken them off in my search, and had stuck my head down the hole. I didn't see any place a ferret could go. The space was full of pink insulation. But that was where the scratching was coming from! So I pulled back the cover, and there was Diva staring up at me!! I snatched her up and gave her tons of kisses. She just kept looking at me like "Hey, I smelled soup. Where is it?" I still can't believe the little turd was under my floor. Thank God she loves her soupies and has a good sniffer!! Needless to say, free roam time is cancelled until I can patch up the hole and fix the grate so it doesn't open. I just checked Diva over when I got home from work, and she is none the worse for wear. Me on the other hand....I think I lost like 5 years off my life!! LOL
