We have A couple vets looking into it for Poppy. She has some slight swelling at her privates. We've been quoted ~$190 for the implant. Has anyone found it cheaper?

The vets said that the Des manufacturer says it's good for at least a year. You're supposed to look for signs returning at 6 months in case you may need another. My research and experience with Kahlua show it can last 18 months. The lupron 3 month we got for Moe lasted over 6 months, but the Des can actually shrink tumors in some cases and arrest growth in most. Two vets I've dealt with called me back and they said from their research it will hopefully revolutionize the way they treat ferrets, but the problem is that if people are too cheap to buy lupron they won't even consider Des.

I rally don't think it's the fact tha people are " too cheap" it's because people don't realize how expensive ferrets can be when they get older and they just have way to many to care for medically

Over at HF we have a number of Florida members doing des implants. They've been quoted anywhere between &150 all the way up to $500 depending on how much the vet wanted to gouge them.

We just had Deslorin put into 2 ferrets at a clinic in eastern Minnesota. Neither of my ferrets are candidates for surgery -- one is ~7 yo and the other has lung issues. The vet said that Deslorin is almost as effective as surgery, and much safer. It should last 18 months. Yes, it's very expensive. But they're worth every penny!

It looks as though we've found a new vet, at an office I once took Icy to. The original vet is still there, and was great with Icy, but I didn't go back because at the time, over 4 years ago, they said they didn't do Lupron. The new partner said she once had a "research colony" of ferrets and couldn't help treating them like pets. She's excited that deslorelin is easier to get now. Plus, they have a modern office and their rates are among the lowest around here.
I had called around to find the best place to take Kahlua for her final visit, and had been talking to this office about des recently. Poppy will be going there soon. I knew they treated ferrets but I had no idea they had a specialist.
