We took Zoey, Zeuse and Dusty for their yearly check up. Zoey our 4 1/2 year old and Dusty our 6 year old, came through with flying colors. They both received a clean bill of health. Zeuse our baby, almost 3 year old has very dry hair and some thinning. We all know this is not good. I ask the vet for and received an implant. I sure this hopes it helps. We have had all three on Melatonin since they joined our family. I have never been comfortabel with the way Zuese's hair has felt since we got him. Last year the vet suggested we up his Melatonin of course we did. This year we did the implant.
I am sorry I have not been around much lately we have had a lot going on. I will try to at least stop in and say hi.

Glad to hear that the visit was a good one. I also take mine for a yearly visit, it's always good for the vet to know how they react when well Are you using liquid Melatonin and if so what mg and how much do you use

We are using liquid Melatonin. The vet says we have been using it longer than any of his other ferret people. We started it in the around 2006.

Mine get 1 ML once a day at about 1:30 - 2:30 PM. I mix it into their soup and they eat it all right up. This makes it so easy. They all come out looking for their soup at just about the right time every day. We don't even have to look for them very often.

Glad to hear they're doing well. I should give Poppy (Carol)an implant. She's Zoey's age and her fur has never been too soft since her first shed. I have a few left that have a year left of shelf life. I like to think of Zoey as the AZ version of Poppy. They remind me of each other, lol. Give them hugs from Dar and me and a sniff from Poppy, lol.

Dee please tell me about Melatonin for ferrets. What is the implant for? I have a new baby named Ali and I am still doing research (did not plan on getting a baby until I did all my research but she kind of picked me, I held her and she ran down my top which she loves to walk around with me and cuddle. After that I could not leave her there she was just 8 weeks and 1/2 the size of all the other ferrets. I doubted she was getting the food she needed also.) I am reading Ferret for Dummies even though my days are busy especially with a new Kit that needs to have as much attention I can give her which I do. It is not a chore it just takes allot of time. Sorry so long with just a small question but I want to make sure Ali gets everything she needs. I am glad the vet visit went well.

Melatonin implant is usually used when. Ferret is whining signs of adrenals disease. If you go to our home page and look under medical health you will find a lot of good information there

Ferrets for Dummies is a great start, but after some years of experience there are some things we disagree with that are in the book. We have learned a lot from personal experience and from these boards. I recommend you join several forums, at least so you can read them. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates other hormones, which regulate other hormones, etc. It is used to treat adrenal disease signs, like hair loss and aggression. They can be effective for 3-4 months. Melatonin alone does not treat the actual disease. It may have some effect in delaying the onset of adrenal disease. One theory suggests that unnatural lighting cycles may have a role in causing adrenal, but I have my doubts, when I have had 3 ferrets that got it and they lived the same lifestyle as the 10 who didn't get it for at least 3 years in my care.

Great question. The liquid melatonin is an experiment I have been participating in since 2009. I am hoping that it will help prevent or at least delay adrenal cancer. Several of my vet’s clients were trying this. He tells me I am the only one still doing it. Zoey will be 5 this year; she has been on the melatonin since she was 9 month old. Dusty has been on it since he was dumped on us Christmas eve 2011 he turned 6 in March. Zeus is the baby he will be 3 in June. Zeus has had dry hair since I brought him home at 3 months. I have always been concerned that he may have a problem that is why I ask for the implant. They get their melatonin every day in their soup between 1:30 and 2:30 PM. They love the soup.
