Kurt, one of our parakeets, died tonight. He was a feral rescue and would not allow us to touch him, but he was a sweet boy. We think he had a stroke a few days ago and he'd lost the use of his wings and, for the most part, his feet. We put food and a water dish on the floor of the cage for him, and his buddy, Kiwi, fed him frequently and tried to get him moving. We thought he could possibly recover, but I guess not. We'll miss his beautiful warbling that filled our house every day. RIP, sweet Kurt.

Kurt flew into the preschool where I worked in the Phoenix West Valley several years ago. He had gained a hold on the wall and was scared to pieces. I got a pool net and trapped him. It was very clear that he hadn't been handled much, if ever. In Phoenix, people just set pets free outside to get rid of them when they no longer want them. We got our Indian Ringneck parrot that way also when she walked into someone's house. We got a ferret (Miss Vanna) when someone left her in a cardboard box on the vet's doorstep. There are people in this world that I will never understand.
