The clock always ticks on adrenal rearing it's ugly head. Just recently I noticed that Mac's tail was getting a little scruffy and then the fur at the top just was beginning to thin. So off to the vet we went. I had already decided that I was not going to do surgery if it was suggested because more often than not once one adrenal is removed the other goes on a rampage and becomes overactive and possibly cancerous also. So being as I already had the 4 month depot Lupron in my possession, I had ordered it for April at the end but it arrived the day after she left us, I took that with me to the vet. Originally I had thought about seeing if there was a ferret in need and I would help them out, but then I thought about it and both my ferrets are getting up there in age. I'm not sure of either but 5-6 is probably a good guess. So Mac received the Lupron yesterday. From past experience the 2000 mcg/4 month depot usually has lasting effects for around 8 months. As of now, Mac has no muscle tone loss nor urinary problems. And I'd like to keep it that way
Will keep you posted on the results

It sure won't hurt to give it to him, even if he doesn't have it. My 4 older ones get rat tail in the summer time, but I learned to wait until a coat change to make sure. Sure enough they all grew back fluffy tails in the fall. I've honestly had more success with the deslorelin implant, but I recommend you give Lupron first.

Heidi, is seems no matter what we do or how well we take care of these sweet babies they always end up with at least one type of cancer. I have use Lupron, Deslorelin, and melatonin. I have had good results with them all. What I use depends on what my vet suggests at the time. I too opt out of surgery as the first choice for the same reasons you gave. All I can say is my prayers are with you.

Heidi I am so sorry to hear about Mac. When I seen that Sarah RIP started getting the rat tail I gave her Melatonin drops and the fur grow back. Than Cinnamon fur on her butt was getting thin so I gave her some. I next time I think I am going to see if the vet will give the implants. Poor boy give him hugs and kisses for me.

Seems like it's always something. With my limited experience with Lupron, it does seem to last twice what is advertised, but you don't want it to wear off because it can take 30 days to kick in. Same with melatonin. I don't know what Suprelorin claims for duration, but the studies I researched for a chemistry project showed 13 months up to 15-16 months. Best to redo @ 12-13 months. It also seems that des/suprelorin is effective on ferrets that respond to lupron, so that's a less expensive, though not cheap test to see if it's worth the investment.

I think it's like when you buy any product, if you like it and it works you hate to change Here are some images from Silveretta, she actually had three injections , each almost a year apart SILVERETTA The one and only lovely little girl Before treatment-January 14, 2000 6 weeks after Lupron injection March 31, 2000-10 weeks after injection Dec. 2000, Silveretta has her left adrenal removed. About 4 months later, she again began showing signs of adrenal. So Lupron was opted for again as she was getting close to 7 December 25, 2001 There is still a tiny spot on her tail that has not grown back, but check out all the hair on her body. Nice, huh?

And there was also Rocki...he had Lupron twice LUPRON THERAPY FOR ADRENAL TUMORS WHEN SURGERY IS NOT AN OPTION Both Rocki and Silveretta had all the symptoms of adrenal tumors, hair loss, both on tail and body, muscle tone loss and lethargy. Due to living in an area where there are no ferret-wise vets, surgery was not an option. After searching the internet and posting on many ferret sites, I decided to use Lupron treatment (2000mcg 4 month depot, subcutaneous injection). Here are the resutls . A few of pictures may be sad to see, but the results are beautiful. Rocki Before Treatment-Jan.14, 2000 Rocki Three weeks after Lupron injection Rocki March 31, 2000 Morning Treat & Wet, Wild 'n Wooly

I should mention that these two ferrets and my first experience with Lupron was when I lived In Puerto Rico. I had no internet at the beginning, didn't get it until 1999 and that was when I contacted Dr Weiss about their problem. There were no ferret vets, in fact for the first 15 years that I had ferrets they ate Friskies cat food. (shhhh don't tell anyone) We did what we could.
