I have been reading that you should feed older ferrets less protein..Do you agree with that?? And if so, what age is the best to cut back and which foods do you use when you do that?? I have no idea how I am going to get Kahlua to eat less protein when she bunks with my other two..lol

Dar, I have always continued to use TF active with all mine no mater what the age. The only time I have used anything else is when I've had a sick ferret and then I've used Gerber stage 2 chicken or turkey baby food. And then sometimes once they have gotten used to the baby food, they won't go back to the TF. Except for Clyde who had lymphoma and left me at age 3, all the rest of my ferrets have lived between 7 and 9 1/2 years old.

I have always kept my ferrets on their regular mix of kibble no matter what their age. I said goodbye to TT just before his 6th birthday, when he left me after surgery for insulinoma. Nada lived over 9 years and Cinco de Mayo was just short of his 8th birthday when I said goodbye to him. My fur kids eat a mix of Totally Ferret for active ferrets, Zupreem for ferrets and a sprinkling of Marshalls. I do give my fuzzies duck soup containg their ground kibble, chicken broth, Gerber's 2nd state chicken or turkey, pure whipping cream and Ferretone. They get their soup twice daily.

Here is a really great food chart to help you pick a good brand of food to feed your ferrets..
www.mdferretpaws.org/care/food_treats.html
I personally am picking foods that are high in protein and fat but contain no corn in the ingredients...The reason being is my vet is attributing the higher insodences of diabetes in Cats and Dogs from the corn in their foods..So he advised to stay away from corn..So if it isn't good for my cat and dog..Figured it probably isn't good for my carnivore fuzzies either..lol

Birdy, there are a lot of good ferret food out there now. I would stay away from Marshall's as it makes for smelly poop. Lot's of people make combos mixing different ones, I guess I'm lazy and only use TF...Oh I do buy their new one with venison and mix it with the active TF

Huronna is right about the many choices of premium, nutritious ferret kibbles that are offered on the market now. I neglected to mention in my earlier reply to you that I also include Totally Ferret's turkey/venison/lamb kibble in my fur kids' mix. Staying with one brand only would be ideal if one was always able to find that brand available. Once though, Zupreem seemed to be taken off the market for a couple of weeks while the company changed the formula. It was handy then to have plenty of TF on hand, as my babies would eat this food too, without a problem. Hugs, Greta

Noah eats Zupreem and Innova now. I used to have four or five in the mix when I had more ferrets but now I cater to Noah's tastes.
