A Petco in Ark. has had a kit confirmed positive for distemper, this kit arrived sick from Marshalls. Please take precautions with your ferrets if you have been near pet shop kits and make sure your ferrets are protected by vaccinations. The kit was in contact with other ferrets in the shipment and in the store, most of which have been sold, this could be a huge mess.
This was confirmed by the vet, the kit was put to sleep.

Very very sad Saddly I can not vaccine again my babies. This year I almost lost Nahum with a very high bad reaction. And 2 years ago it was my little Bear who has a low reaction. So ... we stay quiet at home... shoes and boots stay out the appartment even for visitors...

Very sad indeed. I'm a very protective mommy also. The only place my ferrets go it to the vet, don't even take them for a walk.

We can honestly say we only go to vet, and outside very supervised with our moms once or twice a year when it is warmer. MUCH WARMER.

That news is so sad. I just hope an epidemic of canine distemper in ferrets does not develop because of what happened. My babies have their own room but are allowed access to the rest of my ferret proofed home twice daily. Their only outings are to the vet or occasionally when I walk them in their stroller during the warmer months. Thank you so much for the warning.

That is very sad..Mine go outside just to the vet...I want to take them out in the summer but haven't because always am afraid of them getting while they are outsid. Is it good to take them outside in the winter if it isn't extremely cold out?

Birdy some love the cold and snow and some dont ( just like us!) Some of mine go nuts to go out in the snow, I watch them closely, their feet and nose get cherry red in short order and sometimes they are having too much fun to realize its time to come in out of the cold! I wouldnt let them be out too long depending on the temp but what you can do is fill a container with snow, put it on an old towel in the bath tub and let them go to town! The towel keeps them from slipping and the snow from being too slidey for them to dig in and gives them something stable to stand on. While they are digging to china in the tub o snow I put some towels in the drier to get nice and toasty warm, they come out and adore rolling and tunnelling in the warm towels. Thats what we do here in WI where its often well below 0 and too cold for them to play outside.

I often take Ozzie out onto my front porch for a few minutes in the cold, snowy crisp winter air to stimulate my boy to play. Ozzie is a fat little guy weighing in at 4 pounds 4 ounces and needs all the exercise he can get. My kids only go for walks in their stroller when mommy is behind it pushing. Canine distemper is an air bourne disease though, and can be contracted if there is a dog, racoon or other wild animal sick with the disease and they are in close enough proximity to your fur babies so they can breathe in the germs. It's always best to keep your kids vaccinated against cd unless your vet has advised against it for some reason. Hugs, Greta
