We lost one of friends (family) members a few years back to insoloma and AD. She had AD before we realized what it was and she pasted away. She was a white albino and her name was Missy. We wished we had known more about it. Your baby is adorable.

My vet said I could give the lupron subq if I wanted which I did the first time, the little lady doesnt seem to have much muscle to use for an IM injection LOL this time however, I did give it IM in the back leg, the vet said one can use the muscle that runs along the side of the spine but I wasnt about to try that one on my own. When Asia was first adrenal she gained a LOT of weight, after her surgery she went down well over a pound to her normal weight, here is a before and after pic. Before After

www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=5294&at=0The above is where I get my liquid melatonin from, it was the most reasonable I could find. A pharmacy can order it in if you ask them but they charge over 10.00 for the same thing, my order from these guys came really quickly and shipping was less than others as well. Oral melatonin must be given 7-8 hours after sunrise to be effective and you must be consistant and make allowances for sunrise times as they change daily.

Oh wow what a beauty.. She sure changed on her face didn't she?? Did she always have such a dark face or did that just show up after the surgery?? How old is Asia??
Are you saying you give the melatonin subq?? That is interesting if you do..If that is what you are giving her,, do you still give the 1mg or a different dose??

Sorry I didnt make that clear, previous posts were talking about lupron injections and thats what I was referring to. The liquid melatonin is oral, and the standard dose is 1 mg and 1.5 mg for larger ferrets.

Hmmm I am not sure if I can get Lupron here without a prescription from a doctor.. It would certainly be nicer to give her the shot at home right now...The weather is terrible and not dependable..Sometimes downright dangerous to drive in.. I will ask my vet about that next time..But I can almost bet it won't be advised here.. But you never know till you ask..lol

Are you saying you give the melatonin subq?? That is interesting if you do..If that is what you are giving her,, do you still give the 1mg or a different dose?? Asia is a real sweetie! She was basically a rescue, we found her in a pet shop, very very ill, they had no intention of getting her to a vet so no way was I leaving her there, she slowly got well and put on weight but never played or showed interest in life, she ate, slept and then started over. Since her adrenal surgery she is like night and day, she got that gorgeous coat and plays like crazy, she learned how to dance and socialize and eats like a lumberjack, but now her coat is half gone again, although she seems to feel well and is full of energy and ferrety pranks. We started her on lupron 5 weeks ago and hope it will help her, she had a real tough time with her first surgery, several times we thought we were losing her during her first week after surgery so we really hesitate to do surgery this time unless we have no choice. This was her when we found her and brought her home. Thankfully she took to soup really well and in fact has become a soupaholic!

A lot of good information has been posted, Thank you all. As one of the articles said, we have to decide what we feel is the best way to go. The results of treatment are amazing. I have before and after photos of mine also and it's hard to believe they are the same ferret.

I want to echo Huronna' words...You have all helped me a whole bunch.. I feel much more prepared for what this disease is and how to deal with it...
I have an idea of what I am going to do with treatment for Kahlua..But I will have to talk it over with my vet and see what her advice is now that I have more info I think we can decide on a good protocol for treatment for my baby girl...
It is really sad that at the vets office this disease was considered a normal ferret disease...It totally sux that our babies have to suffer from these chronic illenesses...I really hope with all this testing going on that they can figure out what causes Adrenal and Insulomna so that we can prevent it in our future babies..At least they have figured out how to give them longer better qualitity lives at the moment..

Question for all those who have experienced Adrenal disease...
Kahlua is now getting her hair back..But it is coming in a yellowish color..Is that just a new color fur coming in or is it coming in with oils on it?? Her fur is also feeling much more softer and less wirey and brittle..
It will be two weeks tomorrow that she got her first lupron shot..So I would say it is definately working on her.. Yay!!!

That is great news and very fast too, its taken Asia over 7 weeks but I see new hair coming in! This is great news because if the lupron is working that probably means her tumor this time is not a carcinoma! The hair can come back in a funny color, the main thing is that it comes back! Most of my guys coats this time of year have a yellowish tinge to the undercoat but the guard hairs are the same. I am so happy to hear Kahlua is showing an improvement!

I took these pictures of Kahlua...Just as a photo journel of how she looks 4 weeks after I took the first photos...You may see some difference..But the biggest difference you can's see well on the camera...Her fur is so silky soft..We all love to just pic her up and cuddle with her now...She is looking so beautiful already.. The soup was the only way I could get her to stay still enough to get the poses that were close to what I had before..lolAll the new fur that is coming in is quite a creamy yellow...You can't even see the bare spots on her back legs...
Thursday is our next appointment..So I am curious whether my vet was able to get the melatonin implants, or even the 4 month lupron Depot..The 1 month depot sure did wonders for her already..

Thanx guys,, I have to say seeing how good she looks the expense of the lupron doen't mean a thing.. It feels really good that she is probably feeling better on the inside as well...
One thing I forgot to mention, is in the past 4 weeks I have had make her harness bigger around her body behind her front legs and also just a couple of days ago around her neck...She doesn't feel fatter but she must be getting thicker in those areas.. Is that typical of an Adrenal ferret getting Lupron??Even thought the pics don't show it..Kahlua is no light weight...She was 2.2 pounds last month.. That is a pretty good size for a girl I have heard..lol

Most ferrets lose weight and muscle mass when they become adrenal so some weight gain now would be a good sign. Asia however went the other way and gained over a pound and got a big "adrenal belly" she lost that pound after her surgery and has remained a healthy weight despite sucking up soup like its going out of style LOL
