Ever since they had come home from Granny’s after Thanksgiving, the household had been busy. Daddy had hung brightly colored lights all over the outside of the house, and Mommy had hung a big green wreath on the front door, and decorated the inside of the house with garlands and candles and special nic nacs.
There was lots of whispering going on, too. Mommy and Daddy whispered to each other. Daddy and Alex whispered about what they were getting for Mommy. Mommy and Alex whispered about what they were getting for Daddy. But they all whispered to Stinker about the surprises for each other, because Stinker was good at keeping secrets.
One day Alex came home from school early. Stinker was surprised to hear the bus out front right after he and Mommy had eaten lunch. He ran to the door to meet Alex, dooking happily at him for being home early. Alex dropped his backpack at the door, and scooped Stinker into his arms.
“Whoo-hooo, Stinker! No more school for two whole weeks!
Not until clear after New Years!” exclaimed Alex.
That night, when Daddy came home, he announced, “It’s time to get the Christmas tree. Who wants to go?”
“I do!” shouted Alex.
“I do.” said Mommy.
“I do!” dooked Stinker.
After supper, they bundled into the car, Stinker snug in his travel carrier in the back seat next to Alex. They drove to a big lot with lights strung all around it. There they got out, and Alex tucked Stinker in his jacket, with his head sticking out the top, just below Alex’s chin. They all walked around together for a while, looking at the trees. Stinker had never seen so many all together before.
Finally, after looking at all the trees, Daddy asked, “How about this one?”
“Too tall,” said Mommy.
“This one?” asked Daddy.
“Too short,” said Alex.
After several tries, Mommy exclaimed, “That’s the one!”
“It’s perfect!” declared Alex.
Daddy tied the tree to the top of the car. Stinker thought that was funny looking, a car with a tree on top! Then they drove home, singing “Jingle Bells.”
At home, Daddy took the tree off the car, and cut some of the bottom off with his saw while Alex and Stinker watched. Then he placed the tree in a stand, and carried it in the house.
Mommy was waiting with hot cocoa. She had put some boxes on the living room floor. She served the cocoa, and Stinker even got a tiny taste, with whipped cream, served in one of Mommy’s special tiny teacups that she had had since she was a little girl. The whipping cream was sooo good! But it stuck to his whiskers.
Daddy placed the tree in front of the big window, and made sure it stood straight. It reached almost to the ceiling!
Mommy began opening the boxes on the floor, and Daddy began stringing lights on the tree.
When he was done, Mommy handed Alex a beautiful angel, and Daddy lifted him high in the air so he could place it carefully on the very top of the tree.
Next, Mommy began handing them ornaments, one by one, to hang on the tree. She explained that some of these ornaments were very special, like a beautiful red and gold ball that had hung on Daddy’s tree every year since he was Alex’s age, and one that had belonged to Mommy’s grandmother. Next came Alex’s special ornaments, one from each of his Christmas’s so far. Alex hung them carefully on the tree.
“I almost forgot,” said Mommy, reaching for a small box on the table. “This is Stinker’s special ornament.”
It was beautiful, a white snowflake with a ferret in the middle. It looked just like Stinker! He dooked happily, dancing till he fell over on Mommy’s feet. He then untied her shoe.
“You little stinker!” said Mommy.
Alex hung the newest special ornament on the tree, placing it next to his own very first ornament.
Daddy plugged in the lights, and they all said, “Oooohh, aaaawwww…”
Alex asked, “what about the tinsel, Mommy?”
Mommy answered Ferrets for Dummies says we shouldn’t use it, because it’s very tempting for Stinker to play with, and if he accidentally ate some, it could hurt him.”
“We certainly don’t want that to happen,” said Daddy.
Alex and Stinker agreed.
They sat on the floor, watching the lights blink on the beautiful tree, and drinking more hot cocoa, and talking about Christmas wishes until bedtime.
The next day, Mommy baked cookies! They smelled so good! Alex begged for just one more, and Stinker did, too, dooking and dancing around Mommy till he fell over on her feet. He untied her shoe laces, and Mommy said, “You little stinker!”
She gave him a tiny piece of cookie, and he ran and hid it in the bed he had in the corner, so he could keep Mommy company during the day.
Soon it was bedtime. Mommy set a special plate on the coffee table, filled with her homemade cookies, and Alex carefully poured a tall glass of milk and set it next to the plate.
“It’s for Santa Claus,” explained Alex. “He’s going to bring us presents tonight.”
Mommy and Daddy tucked the sleepy, but excited boys in bed. “Sweet dreams,” they said, “but remember, Santa won’t come if you aren’t asleep!”
The boys were soon snoring, and the house was quiet. Stinker’s eyes popped open suddenly. “What on earth was that noise?” he wondered.
Thump! There it went again!
Stinker crept out of bed, careful not to wake Alex. He tiptoed to the door, and popped his head around the corner.
And blinked.
And blinked again!
For on the sofa, with a cookie in one hand, and a tall glass of milk in the other, sat a big man in a bright red suit!
Stinker snuck down the hallway and laid down flat at the doorway to the living room, trying to be as small as possible.
And the man on the sofa turned his head to look at him, and winked at Stinker.
Stinker blinked once more, and got up and trotted over to the man on the sofa. He looked up into the kindest face he had ever seen, with bright blue eyes that sparkled even brighter than Alex’s.
“Hello, little Stinker,” said the man with a big smile. He reached down and picked the little ferret up, and snuggled him close to his cheek. His whiskers tickled Stinker’s nose, and he sneezed.
Santa chuckled, and he shook all over. “Bless you! Have you been a good boy, Stinker?”
“Yes!” dooked Stinker, “I’ve been really, really good!”
Santa chuckled again.
“Yes, little one, I know you have been. You love Alex and
Mommy and Daddy very much.”
“Yes, I do,” dooked Stinker, amazed that Santa could understand him.
“Alex has been very good, too, sir,” dooked Stinker, now snuggled on Santa’s lap.
“I know he has, Stinker. You see, I always know if little boys have been naughty or nice.”
Santa set Stinker down, and gave him a tiny bite of his last cookie.
“Mommy makes the very best cookies,” said Santa with a sigh.
“Mmmm…hmmm,” dooked Stinker in agreement.
“But I must be going along,” said Santa. “I have many more boys and girls to visit tonight.”
He picked Stinker up and kissed him gently on the head, then put him down and patted him.
“It was very nice to meet you, Stinker. You be a very good boy, and take good care of your family. Now, back to bed with you!”
“Yes, sir!” dooked Stinker, as he danced his way back to bed. He couldn’t resist one last peek around the doorway at Santa.
Santa was taking colorful packages from a big, big, bag, and putting them under the tree.
Stinker slipped quietly back into bed, snuggling close to Alex.
Early the next morning, Alex jumped from bed and ran to the living room, Stinker close at his heels.
“Santa came, Santa came!” shouted Alex.
“I know, I saw him!” dooked Stinker, dancing at Alex’s feet till he fell over.
Mommy and Daddy joined them, and Daddy began handing our presents.
“Why, Stinker, here’s a special one for you from Santa,” said Daddy.
Stinker dug and dug at the paper until he finally got it unwrapped. It was the most wonderful tent Stinker had ever seen, made of brightly colored fabric. Daddy set it up for him, and Stinker climbed in and out and under, and even climbed on top of it!
“You little Stinker,” laughed Alex.
“This is the best Christmas ever,” dooked Stinker, hiding his new Sophie Snake in his tent!
