As if Elvis Fuzz doesn't have enough problems already. We had to stop on the way home from Mom's yesterday . . . yes she LOVES the kids and since Fuzz's bottom had to be watched and taken care of if it prolapsed again . . . we took him with us. We stopped at the parts house to pic up some fuses for the RV. Came back out and my truck wouldn't start. It was around 90 so I got Elvis Fuzz and took him right inside the door out of the heat. One of the managers started walking towards us and I asked him if it was OK to bring Fuzz in because ferrets can't handle the heat. He said no problem 'cause he wanted to see him any way!! Seems one of his friends has a ferret and he loves them. As he was loving on Fuzz . . . who by the way was eating up the added attention . . . he noticed the new scar on his belly and the sores on his neck. I explained to him about his spleen and about the mast cell tumors. He asked how old he was and I told him that we think around 5yo but don't really know because he and another ferret had been abandoned in a apartment and that luckily the manager of the building found them. We got to talking and he said he never realized that there are ferret shelters and that so many were dumped, abused and got rid of because of their bad health. It was nice to talk to a stranger that cares so much about ferrets and other animals and I enjoyed sharing some info with him.
Anyway, back to Elvis Fuzz. You know how sometimes in flourescent lighting you can see things that just don't seem to show up in sunlight or regular house lighting. I was looking at the old boys face and noticed something strange. He has cataracts developing in both of his eyes. They are just big enough to see real good but they are there. Well, I figure as long as none of the other kids tell him that his eyesight is going that he'll never know!! Seriously though I've had several blind ferrets in the past -- some I got were already blind when they came to me and some went blind after I had them a while -- but they all adjusted nicely and moved around in the house and played and interacted with the other kids as if nothing was wrong. The only thing I did was that if I had to re-arrange their room for any reason I'd take everyone else out of the room and give the one with impaired vision some time in there by themselves so that they could check the room out and get their bearings. After about an hour I'd put everyone else back in the room and it was 'business' as usual!!
