Good new and bad news. Got to the hospital today and found out that hubby's kidneys are doing a lot better. That's the good news. The bad news is that they about lost him last night . . . and I didn't find out until I got there this morning!! Seems they have put hubby -- who is 5'8" and weighs 285 on a 1600 calorie a day diet. Plus because of his diabetes he's supposed to have six small meals a day insted of three meals. If nothing else he needs an afternoon and evening snack to keep his blood sugar normal. It took almost three years to get his diabetes under control and they have screwed it up in just a few minutes!! The idiots OD'd him on insulin last night!!! They gave him a big shot of insulin about an hour before they gave him his dinner. Needless to say the insulin did its thing and lowered his sugar levels. So low that he almost went into a diabetic coma!! John said he remembers going to the bathroom and getting a little light headed, and that he started sweating really heavy. When he opened the bathroom door he fell over on the guy in the bed right next to the door. That's all that he remembers and he was still sort of out of it when I got there at 9AM. The doctor said that when he walked into his room that they were pumping glucose water into his veins trying to get his sugar up. The doctor was totally shocked at what happened. He told me that he wasn't sure they were going to get him back. Said it really scared him. The doctor and I had a nice long talk and some nurses got their butts chewed by him. John was doing good when I left him tonight and told him that if a nurse comes in and tries to give him an insulin shot to tell her that he's not taking it until after his meal!! And the doctor agrees. So another day is done and I'll just have to see what tomorrow brings!! Thanks for all of the prayers. I'm sure they are what helped save his life last night.

Sheesh, How is it that hospitals can't manage a diabetic. Everytime my little brother goes to the hospital they mess up his sugar levels and they won't listen to him when he tries to correct them. I'm glad your husband is ok. That's just plain scary.

I have seen it happen many times.....nurses pull these horrific 16 hour shifts, how can you brain function after being on your feet that long. If an insulin shot is given it is supposed to be written in the chart, but if it's not written the next nurse doesn't know it hasn't been given and wham you get another one. I had to draw a patient once that had a 500 sugar and an hour later had a 15. 3 shots of insulin and 2 were never marked on the chart.
Even though I work in a hospital, I sure never want to be a patient in any place

I'm sorry to hear John has had such a bad experience at the hospital, gf. I would think an order from John's doctor would be required before the insulin could be administered to him. Hopefully, this won't happen again. You and John remain in my prayers. Hugs, Greta

Glad his kidneys are improving! Hopefully the nurses will be more aware what they are doing with John so that this doesn't happen again.

Prayers are with you & hubby. Hospitals are scary places and medical professionals are scarier(no offense Huronna) but my mother was a nurse, my neice is one and one of my good friends is one.....they tell horror stories of doc and nurse errors.....mostly of indifference to the patients...it's all about the money. It's a shame but most nurses & doctors once truly cared about their patients now it's just a few. Of course hospitals are run like a business for profit instead of a health care facility and care givers should only be working 8 hr shifts so they can perform at their best. Okay, I'm off my soap box!

How is John doing now, WW? I hope and pray he's fine and dandy now. You both deserve a medal for all you've gone through in the matter of John's health. Hugs, Greta
