Lupron - best place to get it ?

Allo,

Need some help please

Nahum and Bear are both on Lupron on the montly depot.
Nahum dosage is 500mcg and Bear dosage is 200mcg.

Yesterday was their montly shot. Their vet gave to me a prescription
for to get by my own the Lupron for their next shot. She wrote :
"Lupron Depot
3.75mg
1 month supository"

"supository" It is was I read on the paper !

I called my local Pharmacie "Jean Coutu" they said to me, they can order it for me. But I didn't... I wanted to ask here before. I have
heard many things, about good Lupron, bad Lupron. And now I am afraid.

*Where is the best place to buy it ? Somebody has places to refer to me ?

*If my vet asked to me to buy it myself it is because she said because of the dosage of Lupron, when prepared that makes a too big volume to inject to Nahum. If I get my own Lupron she will be able to make it more concentrated, with less volume. Like this less pain for Nahum.

*Anyone has ear something like this before (about big volume)?


Ok I have posted my message on the ferrethealth group. A kind person answer to me and now I am more confuse :

"This is where I get our Lupron Depot. It is a 4-month shot, which you should consider so that you don't have to go back every month. However, a 3.75 mg dose of Lupron is very high, and for one month is much too high. You should check this. We use a 4-month Lupron Depot shot that is 1.0 mg. I have not heard of anyone using more than a 2.0 mg shot of the 4-month variety, which equals 500 mcg (0.5 mg) per month.

My answer to him :

"I wonder if perhaps my vet wants to split the lupron between Nahum and Bear, that will
explain the dose ?

I am really confuse. My regular wonderful vet left the clinic on January for to go back to school (for environemental things). I am still at the same clinic. The vet who is taking
care now about my babies is talking only english. It is difficult for me to communicate
perfectly The other veterinay in more to be the best vet ever, was french.

The one month depot is for now working well for Nahum. And I am afraid to change
something. That seems to be effective, and I don't want to try a different way of depot.
Perhaps I am wrong. I don't know.

For Bear the results are not clear. But he is at his second shot of Lupron. So he is treated since one entire month and 3 days. He has still bald spots in his back, but he has more
energy, and some fur have come back in his neck ! He will have another urinary test in 15 days for to see if the infection is all clear up after his antibiotic treatment.

Now the question I have 3.75 mg of Lupron will give wich amount of prepared lupron ?

If I understand well your 4 months depot is equal at one month depot of 250mcg?"

Hello Marie-Agnes,

I will share with you my experiences with Lupron.
I know mine are very different than others, but this is what worked for us.

I'm going to use Flowers for our example.
Flowers had adrenal for many years.
Due to her heart and a prior surgery that she almost died from and her very tiny size, we all agreed with our Vet, surgery would not be an option for her adrenal tumor. We did an ultrasound and kept an eye on her for years she lived a great quality of life with adrenal. She would go bald, seasonally, then grow fur back. She would get a swollen vulva and we'd clean it with baby wipes to ward off infection ... she had an infection once or twice and it was treated and cleared quickly with antibiotics.

We treated Flowers with Lupron injections and melatonin.

Melatonin implants were not heard of at the time yet, so we gave her drops.

Now, the Lupron, we injected ourselves at home.
Our Vet wrote us a prescription and gave us the needles and showed us how.
We knew how to do both sub q and intra muscular injections.
Flowers had bad reactions to injections under the skin so we chose to do in the muscle with her. She just seemed to form abcess at the sub q injection area and had to have surgery for it once, so the intra muscular worked really well for her. After a couple injections we were old pros at it. It's scary at first, but you get used to it. You do need four hands though, it's hard to do it one person. Not impossible but harder.

Lupron can be purchased at good prices in two places.
If you have a local compounding pharmacy by you they usually work with you on price for pets. This is our local one, that is fairly new www.mixturesrx.com/ ... not to sidetrack, but any of you in Arizona, she is wonderful to work with.

Now the mail order pharmacy I used is in Maryland and they gave me great prices. Can you mail order from Canada here Yukka? If you can, I will dig out the information for you. I lost my group with MSN but I have the info down in my ferret cabinet in my home.

Now as for the dosage and amounts. Many people do monthly, I believe Huronna had excellent luck with a four month depot of Lupron. However, our Vet decided to give Flowers injections according to her symptoms. We started with three monthly shots. Her symptoms started to improve and she was doing great. We would then wait for the symptoms to return before giving another injection. Since the prescription came powdered and we would add the saline to it before injection the shelf life was indefinite so we kept it here at home and made the choice of when to give her more. When we were uncertain, we'd ask our Vet for advice or confirmation it was time for more.

Flowers did great with these treatments.
Now some forms of adrenal are more agressive than others and these treatments won't work as well.

Nahum and Bear have both heart murmur, and Nahum has had already an heart failure through a surgery (for removing his broken fang) So...
As your Flowers Nahum and Bear have their shots intra muscular injection in the back leg (alternate each month on the Right and left) I didn't assist for Bear, but I did for Nahum, and it is so painful, and a lot of stress. I have ask that they make the injection while I am here and holding Nahum, but it was worse. Nahum turned his head as crazy, or his body, crying. So they bring now Bear and Nahum in back, with a technician who is holding them in a strong way. That breaks my heart each time and make me cry. I am not ready to make this kind of injection by myself.

I give them liquid melatonin

My local pharmacy don't make special price for pets. They ask if I have an insurance for pets, but I don't. The price is 390 $ Canadian for the 3.75 mg so 296 US

I don't know if I can mail order from Canada, what is it exactly ? Do you think Maryland will ship to Canada ?

Also I will love that my babies have the 3 or 4 monthly depot, because it will be less stress for them. It is only the good point I see (I know also about the money and long car trip, but here I am just looking for the best for the heath of my babies)

I am still afraid to change something for Nahum. I am afraid if I change the monthly depot, that to de-balance things, and that the illness become worse.

I started using Lupron back in 1999. I had my vet call in a perscription, then I would call with my credit card and my address and they would send it to me. That way as soon as it arrived I was able to make their appointment. I used it on Rocki, Silveretta and then on Frick. It was the Medical Arts Pharmacy, which had been making ferret doses and sizes for Dr. Weiss long before 1999.

Thank you Huronna. If I understand well on their site, they sell the 500mcg ... so no need to split, it will be the right dose for Nahum and also the 200mcg for Bear... And the price are so great.

Do you hve an idea how many dosage my vet can do with the 3.75g she prescripted ?

This pharmacy sells individual doses. They come as two small vials. One with sterile solution for rehydration and the other is the dried power. Once the powder is rehyrdated, it is supposed to be used, not stored for another time.

Your vet may have to write a different perscription or better still she should call the pharmacist (I has talked many times to "Sam") and discuss the best way to go with them

The pharmacy only said that there are not garanty that I have the medication. They didn't explain if it will be because the content. But I presume it is beaucause that. My english langage in real is not the best for to exprim myself and for understand others. They speak too fast...
