RAYMOND'S RECIPE
Favorite Duck Soup 1/2 c. IAMS Kitten Food (Kibble) 1 Can Boost (Vanilla Flavor) 1 Jar #2 Gerber Chicken, 2 oz. 1 Jar #2 Gerber Vegetables & Chicken, 4 oz. Soak kitten kibble, in the blender jar, with enough hot water to cover, until kibble is softened. Add 1 can of Boost and 1/2 can of water. Add baby foods and blend until smooth. Serve 2 oz at a time in a shallow bowl, warmed but not hot. You may need to dip your finger in the soup and "lead" the ferret to the bowl by letting him lick it off your finger, gradually getting closer to the soup until he begins to lap directly from the bowl.

Anne-Martes Duck Soup (with Beverly's help):
Grind your usual high quality kibble to powder (with a food processor or the like). It is important to make it into powder. Add water and let it soak for 20 minutes. Pop the food into the microwave for a minute on full effect. Stir and then pop it back in for another 30 seconds. Add water, nutrical/ferretvite/furovite, and maybe some goates milk (this is highly recomended). Stir, and let it cool to body temperatur (blood temperatur). Add as much water as you like as water is the most important thing. bo-bo it into a syringe and handfeed the ferret. Or have it in a bowl and let him/her eat.The ferret should be fed 100 ml water/food a day. Try to give it approximately 30 ml every other hour, but remember, a little is better than nothing. This soup can be frozen in cubes and heated when needed. It can be reheated once after the "production" but then you will have to make a new batch. It could be wise to "teach" the ferret that the duck soup is food from the start. That way he/she will eat when sick, and not refuse because it is a unknown food. Also new foods can give them diorrhea (sp?) ~Anne-Marte
Katrina's Chicky Soup is loved by Weasel
My version of soup is very simple. What I am using is a simple soup made of baby food (turkey and rice) with ground up kibble and boiled, filtered water. Sometimes I add a few drops of pet tinic or other ferret vitamin but not always. A bit of Dyne may also be added. We call ours Chicky Soup though, not Duck Soup. :-)
NORTH COAST DUCK SHOUP RECIPE
1 cup Dry Food (Totally Ferret, Iams Kitten or other high quality food); 1 piece of chicken fully cooked and de boned; 2 cups chicken broth; 2 hard boiled eggs; 10 papaya tablets; 1 tsp Ferretone or Linatone; 1 6 oz can Iams Cat or Kitten food; 1 TBS Brewers' Yeast; 1/2 tsp honey or corn syrup; 1 inch ribbon of Ferretvite, Nutrical or Nutri-Stat (optional); Water
Cook chicken until well done. The eggs can be boiled along with the chicken.Do not add salt. Save broth. Add de boned chicken to blender with broth, Add papaya tablets and blend on high until mixture is pulverized. Add dry food and continue blending until smooth. Add ater or remaining broth as needed. Add the remainder of ingredients one at a time with the canned cat food being the last item. Add the canned cat food and blend for approx. 3 minutes. Reduce speed to low and add water to top off the blender. The mixture should be thin. Strain mixture if desired. Freeze in ice cube trays. Place the frozen cubes in sealed plastic bags for long term storage. Each cube equals 1 serving. For ill ferrets, feed a minimum of 1 cube every 4 - 6 hours. The more the better but feed at least 4 times a day.
Substitutions: 1 jar of chicken baby food or turkey rice baby food may be substituted for the piece of chicken and a can of low sodium chicken broth can be used in place of the homemade broth if desired.
Modifications:
For ferrets on Lasix therapy or severely dehydrated ferrets - Add 90 mg Potassium (1 tablet).
For adrenal ferrets - Add 200 IU of dry vitamin E (1 tablet).
Of course if you are like us and don't know what the duck soup is going to be used for from day to day just add one tablet of each of the above to the recipe and you are covered for most illnesses and situations. By the way...the site that has these great recipes is....www.mkaresq.com this site has some great info if anyone is interested!!!
From Kristine at Friends of Fuzzies Shelter:
Since a lot of us are at times lacking in funds I thought I'd do this post on how to actually improve their diets while saving some money on food. Most of us are aware that ferrets are carnavours and that insulinoma is caused by a diet to high carbohydrates and sugars. We also know good kibble is expensive and still has a lot of carbs in it. A great supplemental food to add to their diet is Chicken. What I do is take a whole chicken (that is bones, neck, liver and all) and toss it in a pot and cover with water early in the morning. I let it cook into the evening. Then I take my cheapo blender and blend all of it, adding enough broth to make the constancy on the thinner side. (like gerbers chicken baby food) I blend everything!!! Bones, necks, gizzards all of it. After cooking for that long the bones are quite soft and easily blend. I also add two hard boiled eggs to the mix and blend in too. Then I pour into ice trays and freeze. Dump the little cubes after frozen into freezer bags and serve daily. This is very cheap to make and one chicken makes a bunch. My own kids dont' touch kibble till they are done with the chicken soup. I was inspired to make this from Bob Churches chicken Gravy..but too lazy to go try and do it the way he says too. I found that my kids have gotten softer hair and do super well on this. The kids that come in with insulioma are almost stricktly on this diet and they can usually keep pred doses very low on it. As you reheat it you can add other things for the kids too. Like Pet tinic for anemia, milk weed for liver problems..ect. Right now I'm making a big batch with 2 chickens and adding lard too. Lard ups your fat content by a huge margin too. Also keep any extra broth you have and freeze it. You can use it in other duck soup recipe's or just give it plain to kids with dehydration probs. It's not like an electrolyte..but I found a lot of sickies just like to drink it...maybe cause the chickeny flavor?
From JD - Chicken Gravy
One heavy duty Blender, One medium sized fryer chicken, One tube of Ferretvite, Two tablespoons of Dyne, Two cans of Hills AD, Two jars of fruit baby food (ferrets favorite flavor) optional, Three or four eggshells, Cook chicken n large pot for two hours until soft and tender. Remove and allow to cool,Cut chicken into small pieces and puree in blender bones skin fat and all. Add 1 cup of ferret kibble softened in left over chicken broth; add two tablespoons of Dyne, along with Hills AD tube of Ferretvite, and eggshells. Blend until smooth; add kibble until desired thickness is reached. Pour into small containers and freeze until needed. Recipe can be altered to suit needs such as adding pedylite, acidophilus or anything else as needed. It is best to add these things by the serving as needed. You can also replace the fruit baby food with boiled raisins and the water if you prefer.
Another good idea from Kristine:
This one is nice if you just want something on hand that is a "do it
all" sorta recipe that can be kept easily in a sealed jar on your
counter for that emergency situation. I've wanted a decent "dry"
recipe
that I was happy with, since it would store easier. I've finally found
one that I'm rather pleased with.
Easiest if you use a coffee bean grinder-
1/2 cup of kibble grinded into powder
1 tsp of dry electrolyte powder
1/2 cup of PDG
optional-I tablespoon of immunoboost (you can find that at
http://www.revivalanimal.com)
2 scoops nupro
two tablespoons of triage or powdered energel (these are
all high fat dry supplements)
1/4 cup of goat-a-lac or Mothers Milk
Mix it all up together.
You just store this DRY in an airtight container until needed. Then when you need a soup just scoop a little as needed and add warm water to desired consistancy.
You can make a smaller recipe if you only have a few ferts or make the recipe bigger if you have many...especially if many are older or kids with illnesses.
